Piping on the Square, Drymen
Piping on the Square is organised by Drymen Community Development Trust each summer, with local pipe bands playing an hour of music on Drymen Square.
The event takes place in Drymen on Thursday nights in July and August during the summer school holidays. Piping on the Square is very popular, especially with those on holiday, often providing for many an unexpected hour of entertainment. Check local website for information - drymen.org
Over the years, we have met people from all over the world who have enjoyed this event. The different bands do an excellent job of introducing the music they’re playing, providing stories about the tunes, together with a bit of history about their band.
Some of the bands that have performed over the year have become successful in major competitions. Piping on the Square is an essential way to play together and practice in front of an audience.
The event is free, but donations help to support the bands to purchase uniforms and instruments. Donations also help preserve the village square at the heart of Drymen, which is owned by the community.
VisitScotland made a short video of the event a few years back, when they put it online it went viral with over a million views on their channels.
If you’re in Drymen, you’ll know when Piping on the Square is running as there is a large banner displayed outside the Spar Shop and Village Shop, as well as at the entrances to the village from the A811.
