Improve your Photography
Below I have listed a few tips from a blog that I wrote which has the full list of 20 photography tips.
Learn Camera Settings
It may seem daunting to try and understand how a camera works and to work out what all the dials and controls mean, something not helped by complicated and dry manuals that come with cameras. This excellent book from Tom Ang will help you.
Understand Aperture
Aperture is a great way to unleash your creativity, so if there is one skill to hone in on, make it aperture. For example, in the picture below, the background is blurred, whilst the main subject is sharp; this is the depth of field achieved by controlling the aperture.
Take Fewer Photographs
Less is more. Think back to the days of film when you had a roll of 12, 24 or 36 and needed to think carefully before taking a photograph. Don't just rattle off a load of pictures to pick the best. Instead, take some time composing and carefully framing the shot. Think about the settings, light, and story before photographing. Then, once you have pressed the shutter, you can (thanks to digital) do what you couldn't do with film and retake it if necessary.
Loch Lomond Photography Courses and Workshops
I run a number of workshops and training courses at Balmaha, Loch Lomond each year. In just 2.5 hours you can learn camera skills and techniques. It’s a practical course and we walk around by the lochside capturing photographs and understanding how to improve photography skills. You can book below.
Camera Equipment Recommendations
Photographers can choose between mirrorless cameras and DSLRs. About five years ago, I switched to mirrorless and have never looked back. Mirrorless cameras are more compact and lighter, making them great for travel and street photography. They also often offer advanced features like electronic viewfinders and faster autofocus systems.
That switch also moved me from a lifetime of using Nikon cameras to Sony ones. There's nothing wrong with Nikon, Canon, or other makes, but I am recommending Sony here.
Sony A6400 Lightweight and fantastic quality
The Sony a6400 is ideal for enthusiasts, vloggers, and content creators who prioritize portability without compromising image quality and advanced features. Its fast autofocus system, excellent low-light performance, and 4K video capabilities make it suitable for various photography and videography needs. I take the A6400 on trips where I am not lugging around larger cameras, and it does a fantastic job.
Sony A7iii Versatile Camera
The Sony a7III is a popular mirrorless camera suitable for a wide range of photographers, from enthusiasts to professionals. It is ideal for portrait, landscape, street, event, and videography. The ability to seamlessly switch between video and photography is perfect for me. I have taken the time to load preset settings, making operating on a shoot easy.
