Creag an Tuirc, Balquhidder
A short, sharp climb takes you to Creag an Tuirc, a magnificent viewpoint (pictured above) where you can take in Loch Voil and the Braes of Balquhidder. In this guide, we’ll tell you how you can find this incredible vista, a rallying point for the Clan MacLaren.
How to find Creag an Tuirc
The footpath to this walk starts at the kirkyard that contains Balquhidder Parish Church and the resting place of outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor. The path is to the right of the church. The village of Balquhidder is accessible from the A84 at Kingshouse.
There is some parking by the church, if there aren’t any spaces continue along a short distance to park at the Community Centre. (Please make a donation to them in their car park, if parking there.)
What to expect
In our guides, we like to give you a rough idea of what to expect from suggested walks. The distance is 2km (1.2 miles), and you should allow around an hour. It's pretty steep in places but a good path.
After you have reached the back of the church, just by the Kirkton Glen sign, you should hear rushing water. Take a slight detour to see a lovely waterfall, a gem that many of the visitors who come to see Rob Roy's resting place miss.
Get back on track, following the signs for Clan MacLaren Creag an Tuirc and begin the climb.
It’s a good path through the forest. Stick on it and look out for the signs, don’t be tempted to detour off the track if you want to get to the viewpoint, as the signs will keep you right.
Go through the gate to get onto the rocky outcrop of Creag an Tuirc (The Rock of the Boar). Creag an Tuirc is a rallying place of the MacLarens and there is a cairn at the top for the clan.
Also at the top is another contender for our ongoing series of benches with views in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs. What a view it is, looking along Loch Voil and the Braes of Balquhidder.
