Duncryne Hill (The Dumpling)
Discover Duncryne Hill, affectionately known as The Dumpling, near Gartocharn in Loch Lomond. This guide covers the short hike, panoramic views, local tips, and nearby attractions. It is perfect for nature lovers and photographers. Like all of our guides, we update them regularly and included in this one are the (positive) changes to the path quality
Finding the Dumpling
From now on, we’ll call it ‘The Dumpling,’ as everyone locally calls it. It’s approximately a 30-minute drive from Glasgow and just over an hour from Edinburgh. If traveling by public transport, take a train to Balloch, then a bus or taxi to Gartocharn.
Directions and Parking for The Dumpling
From the Old Military Road, between Balloch and Drymen, turn into Duncryne Road in the village of Gartocharn, after a minute or two, you will find a layby on the left-hand side. If this is full, consider parking in the village and walking here instead.
Introduction to Duncryne Hill
The Dumpling, is a small but striking hill near the village of Gartocharn. Standing at just 465 feet (141.8 metres) above sea level, it offers an easy yet rewarding hike with one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Loch Lomond and its surrounding landscapes. Despite its modest size, The Dumpling’s summit showcases the majesty of the Scottish Highlands in a way that’s hard to rival.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a quick outdoor escape, Duncryne Hill is an excellent choice for a short adventure.
The pathway up the Dumpling
A public access route has been arranged with the landowner for the half-mile walk to the viewpoint. The trail consists initially of a path through the forest, then an approach that can be very muddy, and finally, the hill itself and a short but steep climb to the summit.
The path begins near a small gate and climbs steadily through grassy fields. Along the way, you’ll pass sheep grazing, adding to the experience's charm. Wear sturdy footwear, as the trail can be muddy after rain.
As you ascend, the views begin to unfold. The final stretch leads to a rounded summit that offers a full 360-degree panorama.
There is quite a lot of space at the summit, which has a triangulation point. The views are spectacular and an excellent reward for such a short climb.
The short but sweet climb is suitable for walkers of all fitness levels. In summary:
• Trail Length: Approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) round trip.
• Duration: 20–30 minutes to the summit, depending on pace.
• Difficulty: Easy, with a gentle incline.
Path Conditions
I have included pictures of the terrain as well as the views to help you consider when to climb it and what footwear to choose. The Dumpling is a local hill, and I have climbed it many times in varying weather conditions.
Great news: the path approach to the hill was resurfaced a few years ago (shown in the first picture below). The local development trust hopes to complete the work in the future, but this is already a massive improvement.
Summit View
It’s a beautiful view across Loch Lomond, looking across to Ben Lomond and the eastern shores of the loch.
RSPB Loch Lomond
Combine The Dumpling with a walk along nearby Aber Shore, part of the RSPB Loch Lomond reserve at Gartocharn.
