Duncryne Hill (The Dumpling)
Duncryne Hill (better known as The Dumpling) is a short climb that offers outstanding views across Loch Lomond and its islands, with Ben Lomond in the distance. This guide has details of the location, parking and path conditions.
Finding the Dumpling
We’ll call it ‘The Dumpling’ from now on, as that is what everyone calls it. From the Old Military Road, between Balloch and Drymen turn into Duncryne Road in the village of Gartocharn.
Parking for The Dumpling
After a minute or two, you will find a layby on the left-hand side. If this is full, consider parking in the village and walking here instead.
The pathway up the Dumpling
A public access route has been arranged with the landowner for the half-mile walk to the viewpoint. The trail consists initially of a path through the forest, then an approach that can be very muddy, with finally the hill itself and a short but steep climb to the summit.
There is quite a lot of space at the summit, which has a triangulation point. The views are spectacular and an excellent reward for such a short climb.
Path Conditions
As well as showing photographs of the views I have included pictures of the terrain to help you consider when to climb it and what footwear to choose. The Dumpling is a local hill, and I have climbed it many times in varying weather conditions.
The great news as the path approach to the hill has recently been surfaced (shown in the first picture below.) The local development trust hope to complete the work in the future, but this is already a massive improvement.
Summit View
It’s a beautiful view across Loch Lomond, looking across to Ben Lomond and the eastern shores of the loch.
RSPB Loch Lomond
Combine The Dumpling with a walk along nearby Aber Shore, part of the RSPB Loch Lomond reserve at Gartocharn.
