Loch Voil and Loch Doine

Loch-Voil-0263.jpg

Deep in Rob Roy Country lochs Voil and Doine can be found, close to Balquhidder; we're featuring them in another in our Lochs of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs series, with a guide to the two neighbouring lochs. From west of Balqhidder, a narrow road with passing points runs alongside both of the lochs.

Loch Voil

These photographs of Loch Voil, the larger of the two lochs, were taken along the roadside. For an elevated view of Loch Voil, head to the gathering place of Clan MacGregor reached from Balquhidder and the nearby hill of Creag an Turic.

Celebrating Park People

The film above features Tom Lewis, from Monachyle Mhor hotel. The boutique hotel is close to the narrow strip of land between Lochs Voil and Doine. Tom is a renowned chef and has travelled the world promoting fine food and drink in Scotland.

This film is part of a series of films that I produced for Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs to celebrate Park People & Their Stories. As well as an interesting insight into Tom’s life, it shows the beautiful landscapes around this part of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs.

Mirror Box

On the strip of land between the two lochs and opposite Monachyle Mhor hotel is the Mirror Box. When you enter the field where the mirror box is installed, you may not be able to see it at first; this is because it does so well living up to the original brief for it to blend into the landscape. You may, though, spot some curious sheep staring at themselves in the exterior mirrors!

The Mirror Box is one of a series of scenic viewpoints around Loch Lomond & The Trossachs; you can read about this and the others at the link below. It is also on the BLiSS Trail, a series of art installations that link the local communities of Balquhidder, Strahyre, Lochearnhead and St Fillans.

Sat in the Mirror Box, you can look straight out to one of the lochs, whilst a series of carefully positioned mirrors provide a view of the loch behind you. Check out some aerial footage of the Mirror Box and the two lochs later on in this guide.
