Loch Ard, The Trossachs

Here is another feature on one of the 22 Lochs of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. This feature is about Loch Ard in the Trossachs by Aberfoyle.

Sir Walter Scott, whose literary work put the Trossachs on the map, described Loch Ard in his Rob Roy novel as an 'enchanting sheet of water.'

Loch Ard Adventure Centre

Loch Ard Adventure Centre

Loch Ard is an excellent loch to get on the water using a kayak, canoe, sailboat, or stand-up paddleboard. Loch Ard Adventure Centre, by Forest Hills Hotel, has many water-based activities, including an obstacle course in the water.

If you're not on the water, then the best way to enjoy Loch Ard is by foot or bike. The B829 from Aberfoyle runs alongside Loch Ard and Loch Chon, leading eventually to Inversnaid or Stronachlachar. Cyclists like to cycle a loop along this road, the shoreline road of Loch Katrine and Duke's Pass, for a dramatic and scenic but at times strenuous ride.

On the other side of Loch Ard, there are some forestry tracks to cycle and walk. 16-miles of pathway take in the Loch Ard Sculpture Trail, there is also a longer forestry road that connects Aberfoyle and Inversnaid.

Altskeith House, on the banks of the loch, is our favourite location to photograph weddings in the National Park. A beautiful setting, with the loch and Ben Lomond providing a stunning backdrop to wedding photographs. Lucky couples (if the loch is calm enough) get to row a boat on the loch for pictures, with photographers like me in a second boat trying not to fall in as they balance to get the perfect shot.

The Trossachs has so many beautiful lochs that are each unique and special in their own way. Loch Ard is definitely well worth a visit, especially if you can enjoy it by foot, bike or boat.
