Fishing in the Park
Angling in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs
If you would like to fish in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, this guide will help you to find the best location. Click here to download a helpful leaflet about responsible angling, including information about conservation and safety. This leaflet by the National Park Authority contains a handy map of local fisheries across the park. Below we’ve linked some useful fishing websites and recommended freshwater and sea-water fishing locations.
Callander - River Teith
Anglers gather by the River Teith in Callander on 1 February each year for the official launch of the new fishing season. If you are in Callander, I highly recommend attending the short ceremony, usually around 9 am, even if you are not into fishing.
A small parade leaves Ancaster Square to mark the occasion, and you can see pictures (above and below) from when we attended.
Stirling Council owns and manages salmon fishing rights on the Forth and Teith rivers, and the fishing season runs to 31 October. Check out Fishing Around the Forth, where you can buy permits and discover where you can learn how to fish.
Loch Goil, Argyll
Loch Goil Cruisers is on the road between Lochgoilhead and Carrick Castle. Whilst their boats are not specifically fishing boats, they are popular for those looking to get on the water for fishing. Depending on the season, you may catch mackerel, wrasse, pollock, or cod on this magnificent fjord-style sea loch. They have rods for hire that are perfect for children and novices.
Fishing in the Trossachs
We were contacted recently by James Bayne fishing tackle, established in 1938. They sell fishing permits for most of the waters in the National park, and their Fishing in the Trossachs website has valuable information on where you can fish in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, along with the do's and don'ts for every water.
Lake of Menteith Fisheries
Quint Glen, manager of the Lake of Menteith Fisheries, kindly took me out on one of the boats to get up close to Scotland's only lake for an article that I was writing for a local magazine.
Quint has worked for the fisheries for 25 years and is one of three staff for the community organisation. Shareholders are riparian or local landowners with historic rights to the Lake granted by the Duke of Montrose. Lake of Menteith is the most well-known stocked trout water in Scotland and is home to the National Fly-Fishing Championship.
15,000 anglers visit annually, with all 36 fishery boats in action most weekends; no fishing is allowed from the banks, which are protected by SSI rules. 30,000 trout are grown in ponds and are stocked each week evenly across the 700-acre lake. Fly-fishing lessons are provided, with incentives to attract younger anglers.
